Traditional mainframe monitoring has long relied on predefined metrics, thresholds, and alerts to maintain availability and performance. While this approach remains effective for stable environments, increasing system complexity, hybrid architectures and faster release cycles demand deeper insight into why issues occur, not just when they occur. Observability and the principles behind OpenTelemetry, enable this shift in operational thinking. This session explores how OpenTelemetry principles can help evolve mainframe operations from monitoring-centric to observability-aware, even in environments where full OpenTelemetry instrumentation is not yet practical. Rather than replacing existing monitoring tools, the talk focuses on augmenting traditional mainframe visibility with observability concepts such as context, correlation and end-to-end transaction understanding. Attendees will learn the key differences between monitoring and observability and how concepts like traces, metrics, and logs improve root-cause analysis and troubleshooting across mainframe and distributed systems. Through practical examples, the session demonstrates how observability thinking enables operations, quality and development teams to move from reactive firefighting to proactive analysis and faster resolution. The session also addresses skills and cultural considerations, including incremental adoption, collaboration across platform teams and alignment with modern DevOps practices; while preserving the stability and resilience expected from mainframe environments. Participants will leave with practical guidance and actionable takeaways to apply OpenTelemetry principles within mainframe operations.
