The rate calculation engine was stable. It was business-critical to the entire organization and had been running for years without incident. The problem started when it had to be exposed through a new iOS application, builted entirely by a distributed team with no mainframe background. What initially appeared to be a simple integration exercise quickly exposed a structural testing gap common in hybrid enterprises. The mobile team expected stateless APIs, environment resource contention, large volumes of data being incorrectly updated (that drove me crazy ). At the same time, the mainframe team faced a different disruption: asynchronous mobile release cycles, API contract expectations, automated regression pipelines, and a demand for near real-time feedback that traditional processes were not designed to support. This session presents a detailed technical case study of how we closed that hybrid testing gap. No additional resources were added, and no timeline extensions were granted. We will explore: How we implemented multiple integration architectures (yes, there was more than one access method to mainframe information as often happens in large enterprises) How we tested all 18 use cases simultaneously and how we eliminate batch dependencies during functional testing How CI/CD orchestration was extended to include mainframe artifacts How cross-platform debugging workflows were redesigned to reduce defect resolution time (without debugging tool at the mainframe environment ) How knowledge transfer frameworks were created to upskill distributed engineers in mainframe fundamentals Rather than forcing one platform to adapt to the other, we engineered a structured integration model that allowed both ecosystems to operate at their native velocity while remaining synchronized. This is not a modernization story. It is a case study in testing under compressed timelines and cross-platform engineering alignment within complex hybrid enterprise environments. Attendees will leave with concrete patterns, anti-patterns, and implementation strategies applicable to any organization where mainframe business logic must be validated and delivered through modern digital channels.
