Mainframe API-First: Unlocking z/OS with REST

(2J)

Stream: Virtual Room 2
Time: 13:45 - 14:30

Presentation

The mainframe processes the world's most critical workloads — yet for most modern developers, it remains unreachable. REST APIs are changing that. z/OSMF brings a clean HTTP interface to z/OS — letting you submit jobs, manage datasets, issue console commands, and automate operations using the same patterns you use everywhere else in your stack. No VTAM. No proprietary middleware. Just REST. This session cuts straight to the practical — real API examples, security patterns, and what API-first mainframe architecture unlocks for your automation, integration, and AI pipelines. If you want the mainframe to be a first-class citizen in your modern platform, this is where it starts.

  • I've spent 18 years living and breathing mainframe — from writing Assembler code and building IMS systems to architecting platforms that the global economy quietly depends on. Then AI took over my thinking entirely. Now I'm on a mission to connect these two worlds — bringing agentic AI to mainframe to solve problems that actually matter in the real world. I care deeply about mentoring the next generation of engineers and advocating for customers who need technology to work, not just impress. I'm not here to retire the mainframe. I'm here to give it a brain.
