SQL performance tuning remains one of the most critical and time-consuming responsibilities for Db2 engineers. Identifying inefficient queries typically requires detailed analysis of access paths, query metrics, and subsystem statistics. This session explores how machine learning techniques can assist SQL performance analysis by identifying patterns associated with inefficient query behavior. Using a sample Db2 dataset containing query execution metrics such as rows scanned, join complexity, sort operations, buffer pool activity, and execution time, we demonstrate how these metrics can be transformed into training data for machine learning models. A practical demonstration using Python, pandas, and scikit-learn shows how machine learning algorithms can analyze SQL execution metrics and identify queries that may lead to performance issues. The example uses a sample Db2 database and synthetic workload data, allowing attendees to understand the approach without requiring access to production systems. Attendees will learn how AI-based analytics can complement traditional SQL tuning techniques and help engineers detect inefficient query patterns earlier, supporting a more proactive approach to Db2 performance optimization.
